Dr. Au is currently Chair of Uncertainty, Reliability and Risk at Institute for Risk and Uncertainty, University of Liverpool. He obtained BEng (1995) and MPhil (1997) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and PhD (2001) from the California Institute of Technology. Dr Au specializes in fundamental and applied research in engineering reliability analysis and structural health monitoring. He has published 2 research monographs and 90+ SCI journal papers. His papers have received 3351 SCI citations (H-index 28) in Web of Knowledge. He is a recipient of the IASSAR Junior Research Prize (2005), Nishino Prize (2011) and the JSPS fellowship (2014).

The frequency response of a site, i.e., ‘site spectrum’, characterizes the amplification of motion between the bedrock and the ground surface at different frequencies. It is an important property governing the dynamic response of infrastructure subjected to earthquake motions. While the site spectrum can be determined based on modeling information of the soil strata at the site, field methods allow the properties to be back-calculated from in-situ measurements. Methods differ in their testing environment/assumptions with implications on logistics and equipment. This talk gives an introduction to a field method called ‘microtremor test’ that determines the site spectrum based on vibration measurements on the ground surface under ambient environment. The method is attractive in terms of economy as it does not require active excitation or its measurement. Underlying assumptions and field applications will be discussed.
